Many dogs are prone to ear infections, particularly dogs with long ears. When your dog’s ear canal has limited access to oxygen, moisture can build up in the ear canal and microbes such as yeast and bacteria will start to breed. How do I know if my dog has an ear infection?

Your dog will usually scratch regularly under their chin and ear. They usually make a unique breathing/scoffing sound when they’re scratching. They also tend to put their paw in their ear in an attempt to remove any debris.

Can I prevent my dog from getting an ear infection?

Yes you can! Make sure your dogs ears are cleaned every week, particularly for long eared dogs. Do not allow any water to get into your dogs ears. If water sits in the ear canal it will begin to grow microbes, the same way a pool of water starts to look when it sits in a bucket after several days.

Can I make my own homemade ear cleaner?

Making your own homemade ear cleaning solution is not recommended. There are several reasons for this and one is the ingredients are not specifically made for your dog’s ears. The ingredients may irritate your dogs ears if not used at a safe dilution. Another reason a homemade ear cleaner is not a good idea is it should be made in an aseptic facility to prevent any microbes (such a dust) entering the product. An ear cleaner must be pH balanced (value = 7). Microbes thrive in acid environments (pH 4-5.5).
